The Champaign Police Department is committed to fostering an environment that supports and encourages diversity and inclusion, and to providing its public safety services equitably and cooperatively alongside the community. We recognize the importance of listening to and hearing all voices and viewpoints to help positively impact our work and those we serve. The Department offers community liaisons to help improve communication and to support our LGTBQ+ and other communities to strengthen feelings of trust and involvement.

The Department liaisons are an accessible and friendly ear to help answer your questions, initiate outreach and to address any public safety concerns you may have. They work in tandem with the City’s Equity and Engagement Department to promote equity and human rights in the community. Diverse insight and perspective are critical in the fulfillment of our mission, and we welcome yours.

Champaign Recognized for Inclusive LGBTQ+ Policies and Services

In 2023, the City of Champaign was again recognized by the Human Rights Campaign Foundation for the City’s inclusive LGBTQ+ laws, policies, and services. The Foundation ranked Champaign among the highest rated cities in the State of Illinois, achieving a perfect score in the index. The MEI is updated annually and used to measure how inclusive municipal policies, laws, and services are for the LGBTQ+ community. The MEI rates cities on non-discrimination laws, the municipality as an employer, municipal services, law enforcement, and leadership on LGBTQ+ equality.
