IACP and NAACP Shared Principles Agreement
In March 2018, the Champaign Police Department joined the Illinois Association of Chiefs of Police (ILACP) and the Illinois National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) announced the “Shared Principles” agreement.
This agreement was created in late 2014, months after unrest in Ferguson, Missouri. Leaders from the ILACP and NAACP came together for open and honest discussions. The focus of the discussions was how to build trust between police and communities of color. Through these conversations, they developed the ten-point Shared Principles Agreement. It was the first of its kind in the nation. The agreement focuses on strengthening relationships, building trust, and improving public safety for all.
