Multi-Family Common Area Inspections
In 2003, the Champaign Fire Chief established an Apartment Safety Task Force (ASTF) to study fire safety issues in multifamily buildings. The ASTF recommended that the City establish a systematic multifamily housing inspection program in partnership with property owners. In March 2005, the City Council approved a program for the systematic inspection of apartment common areas. Inspections conducted under this program are intended to identify property maintenance and International Fire Code deficiencies in multifamily common areas, including hallways, stairwells, laundry, mechanical and storage rooms, and other areas commonly shared by residents.
