Neil Street Plaza

In June of 2017, the community embarked on a process to reimagine a City-owned parking lot into a vibrant public plaza.  The process included hundreds of participants who share an abundance of ideas for the new space.  The Neil Street Plaza will expand the appeal of Downtown Champaign for all ages and lifestyles, it will improve the image of the community and create a dedicated space for hosting special events.

The plaza is proposed to be built in three phases.  Engineering work for Phase 1 is complete.

The future Neil Street Plaza is a stop on the new Champaign County African American Heritage trail.  To learn more about the trail and Frederick Douglass’ speech at the former Barrett Hall on the site of the plaza visit:  www.ccafricanamericanheritage.org.
