FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA) REQUESTS
Every public body in Illinois is required to permit inspection of or provide copies of public records that are subject to disclosure under the State’s Freedom of Information Act. The Illinois Freedom of Information Act can be found on the Illinois Attorney General’s website. This website is a good source of information about the State’s Freedom of Information Act and how to submit public records requests.
What kinds of City records can I receive?
The Illinois Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) very broadly defines the information which you can request from the City. It covers all public records, including electronic information. Some records may be exempt from disclosure and may be redacted or denied in accordance with the Illinois Freedom of Information Act.
Who do I ask?
Before submitting a FOIA request, you might search the City website for the information you are looking for. The most popular information is available online, such as Council agendas and minutes, and meeting recordings.
How much will it cost?
Paper copies: $0.15 per page – First 50 pages are free
Computer Records: $0.75 per CD; $1.00 per DVD
Police Records: There is a fee of $5.00 per accident report
*Fees are pursuant to 5 ILCS 140/6(b) of the Freedom of Information Act
