Shooting Investigation – 1000 Block of North Champaign Street

On July 5, 2020, at approximately 12:39 a.m., Officers were called to the 1000 block of North Champaign Street for the report of a shooting. Officers were already in the area investigating a fireworks complaint when they heard the gunfire and immediately responded. Upon arrival, several individuals were observed fleeing the scene and dozens of shell casings were located. Police then learned a 24-year-old female had arrived at a local hospital by a personal vehicle with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to her leg.

The preliminary investigation indicates there was a large gathering at an outdoor party when an altercation occurred. The altercation subsequently led to gunfire and the victim being struck.

Any resident or business in the nearby area with exterior surveillance camera systems is encouraged to contact the police department. It is believed video footage may be of investigative assistance.

The investigation is ongoing, and no arrests have been made at this time. Future updates may be provided as they become available.
