Shooting Investigation – 1600 Block of Rion Drive

On July 6, 2020, at approximately 1:34 a.m., Champaign Police responded to the 1600 block of Rion Drive for the report of shots heard at the Microtel Inn. Upon arrival, officers discovered evidence consistent with gunfire on the outside and inside of a hotel room. Shortly after, police were notified two victims, a 21-year-old male and a 23-year-old male, arrived at a local hospital by a personal vehicle with non-life-threatening gunshot wounds.

The preliminary investigation indicates there was a party inside a private room on the third floor of the hotel where several individuals were gathered. Gunfire ensued, striking the victims, and leading to property damage. Several shell casings were recovered from the scene.

Any resident or business in the nearby area with exterior surveillance camera systems is encouraged to contact the police department. It is believed video footage may be of investigative assistance.

The investigation is ongoing, and no arrests have been made at this time. Future updates may be provided as they become available.
