A public open house will be held on Thursday, March 14, 2013, from 5:30 PM to 7:30 PM, at the Southwest Fire Station No. 6, 3911 W. Windsor Road, Champaign, for the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) project that will replace the Windsor Road Bridge over Interstate 57. The contractor for the project is O’Neil Brothers, A Division of MACC of ILL, Inc. with a bid amount of $2,376,785.10. Representatives from IDOT and O’Neil Brothers, Inc. will be on-hand to answer any questions related to the project. Construction plans and other exhibits illustrating the improvements will be available for viewing.
IDOT’s project will replace the existing narrow two-lane bridge with a wider bridge that carries two twelve foot traffic lanes, two six-foot bike lanes, and two five-foot sidewalks with protective pedestrian fencing on both sides of the new bridge. The bridge will be constructed in two halves, which allows Windsor Road to remain open to traffic throughout the project. Temporary traffic signals will be used to allow one-direction of traffic at a time through the work zone. IDOT’s construction contract calls for a start date of April 1, 2013, and a final completion date of November 1, 2013.
The City of Champaign’s Windsor Road Complete Street project that will rebuild and widen the approaches leading up to IDOT’s new Windsor Road bridge will be under construction in 2014. The City received a Federal ITEP Grant award in the amount of $1.7 million to help fund construction. The tentative schedule for the Windsor Road Complete Street bridge approach project is to complete design work in 2013; bid letting in January 2014; start construction in April 2014; reopen Windsor Road by start of school in August 2014; and final project completion in September 2014.
