The City of Champaign is turning up the volume on one of its most popular summer traditions. Sound Bites, the City’s free weekly concert series, has returned to the Downtown Plaza for another exciting season!
Live music will once again fill the Plaza every Thursday from 12–1:15 p.m., offering the perfect midday break. New this year, the experience extends into the evening with an after-work series from 4:30–6:30 p.m., giving the community even more opportunities to unwind, connect, and enjoy the energy of Downtown Champaign. Throughout April, the evening series features music through the Plaza speakers, with live performances beginning May 7.
To enhance the Thursday experience, the Sound Bites Lunch Club Card will return as a special perk for attendees. Available at the Plaza, the card provides discounts and exclusive offers on food, drinks, and shopping. Discounts are valid at participating Downtown businesses throughout the day on Thursdays during the Sound Bites season (April – May and September to October).
New for 2026, Sunday Sound Bites is a family-friendly addition to the Downtown Plaza. Each Sunday event will feature games, trivia, and interactive activities led by a live host, followed by live music from 2–3 p.m. Attendees are encouraged to grab takeout from their favorite local restaurants and enjoy a relaxed afternoon on the Plaza with family and friends.
The City is also introducing enhanced placemaking throughout the week. From Monday through Wednesday, the Plaza will feature expanded outdoor dining, creating a welcoming space to gather, relax, and enjoy local food and fresh air. “This season is all about creating more ways for people to experience Downtown,” said organizer Keke Johnson. “From lunchtime concerts to after-work music and expanded outdoor dining, we’re excited to offer something for everyone and make the Plaza a go-to destination all week long.”
