City of Champaign Municipal Aggregation Program Continued Suspension

The City’s Municipal Electric Aggregation (MEA) program was suspended in July 2024 and will remain suspended until the program is re-evaluated in spring of 2026. City staff attempted to reinstate the program in the summer of 2025; however, after four attempts, the electricity supply rate from Ameren is anticipated to be lower than the most competitive offer rate the City received, meaning Ameren customers are expected to pay less.

This does not mean the City’s MEA program has been terminated. In the future, if the City can secure a contract for competitive electricity supply at a rate lower than Ameren’s expected supply rate, the City’s program can be reinstated.

At this time, customers may:

  1. Do Nothing – Stay with Ameren. Choose to do nothing and keep Ameren as your electricity supplier. The Ameren rate will fluctuate somewhat monthly.
  2. Choose a New Energy Supplier. Select a new energy supplier for your individual residence. There are over 40 suppliers to choose from at the ICC Plug-In Illinois website. There are a wide range of options which include renewable energy, fixed/variable electricity rate, and different contract term lengths.
  3. Subscribe to Community Solar. There are companies with community solar offers on the Citizens Utility Board website. There are several options to consider which include percent savings, different contract term lengths, and different billing options.

There is more information concerning MEA on the City’s website at champaignil.gov/mea. If you have additional questions, please call 217-403-4700 to speak with a Customer Service Representative.
