Champaign Police were dispatched to the 200 block of Burr Oak Court at 10:19 p.m. on Sunday, June 8, following reports of a shooting with injuries in the area. On-scene, officers quickly located a 13-year-old teenager with life-threatening gunshot wounds and immediately began to render medical aid. The teen was transported to an area hospital for treatment and remains in critical condition. Additionally, as officers were working to get the teen ready for transport, a 15-year-old victim with an apparent gunshot wound to the hand was also located and transported for treatment.
The initial investigation indicates that multiple unknown subjects were involved in an altercation in this area when shots were fired and the victims were struck. The gathered group then quickly fled before officers arrived. In addition to the injuries, damage has been located to one building and one vehicle stemming from this incident.
Officers continue to canvass the surrounding area for witnesses and video footage that may be of investigative assistance. Any resident or business in the nearby area with exterior surveillance camera systems is encouraged to notify the police department. No arrests have been made at this time and the investigation is ongoing. Future updates may be provided as they become available.
