CPD Officers Support Special Olympics with Annual Torch Run

On June 7, 2023, Champaign Police officers once again supported the Special Olympics by participating in Leg Two of the Illinois Law Enforcement Torch Run. This rainy event brought together officers from the Champaign, Urbana, Rantoul, University of Illinois, and Parkland Police Departments, Champaign County Sheriff’s Office, and METCAD 9-1-1 to carry the “Flame of Hope” and honor the Special Olympics athletes ahead of their annual summer games, held in Bloomington. Runners were escorted by squad cars from each of the participating agencies, along with a group of athletes excited for this year’s games. The four-mile route departed from OSF Hospital in Urbana as the sun came up and ran along University Avenue to Randolph, Church, and Mattis Avenue before ending at the Olympic Memorial at Parkland.
