Boneyard Creek Community Day (BCCD) started in 2006, and what started as a few volunteers to clean up the Boneyard Creek, has turned into over 900 volunteers to clean up litter around the community.
Boneyard Creek Community Day is organized by Champaign Park District, Urbana Park District, University of Illinois Facility Services, Prairie Rivers, Savoy, City of Urbana, Champaign Urbana Soil and Water Conservation, and City of Champaign. The organizers of the BCCD are able to solicit community members and businesses in the community for donations to cover the cost of food, advertisement, and cleanup supplies.
There were over 600 volunteers registered for Scott Park, most were University of Illinois Students who took part in cleaning up their campus, but there were also a lot of families and adults that wanted to help make their community and waterways cleaner. Staff from Public Works worked alongside volunteers to be site leaders at the off-site locations, or work alongside volunteers picking up litter and debris. Besides Scott Park, we had groups meet at Kauffman Lake, Boulware Trail, Urbana Boneyard, US Route 45 in Savoy, Crystal Lake Park, Hedge Pop Park, Edgebrook Dr., Bristol Place, N. First St., and N. Prospect / Interstate Dr.
The day started off sunny, but the weather became cooler throughout the afternoon. The afternoon weather led to not as many participants staying for the educational events. Overall, it was a good event that helped to reduce litter throughout our community.
