Officers from the Champaign Police Department responded to the 1200 block of North Market Street at 12:43 p.m. on April 17, 2022, for a report of shots fired. A short time later, a 27-year-old male victim arrived at a local hospital by personal vehicle with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound. He is presently in stable condition.
An investigation revealed that a verbal altercation between two individuals turned into a physical altercation before the suspect fired one round, striking the victim in the arm. The suspect was identified and located in the 1300 block of North Sixth Street by officers a short time later. He showed signs of intoxication at the time he was located. A search of his vehicle yielded a firearm and a spent shell casing. The weapon was collected as evidence and the suspect has been taken into custody for suspected DUI, pending charges in this incident.
Even though a suspect is in custody, the investigation is ongoing. Champaign Police ask that anyone who has additional information please contact police at 217-351-4545.
