Homicide Investigation – 1500 Block of West Kirby Avenue

On September 30, 2021, at approximately 5:34 p.m., Champaign Police responded to the 1500 block of West Kirby Avenue for the report of a shooting with injuries. Upon arrival, officers located a 17-year-old male in the roadway suffering from a life-threatening gunshot wound to his torso. Responding officers rendered medical aid until the victim was transported to a local hospital. The victim succumbed to his injuries a short time later.

The preliminary investigation indicates the victim was sitting alongside the roadway with another individual when multiple masked suspects approached on foot and fired upon them, striking the 17-year-old male.

Any resident or business in the nearby area with exterior surveillance camera systems is encouraged to notify the police department. It is believed video footage may be of investigative assistance. No arrests have been made at this time and the investigation is ongoing. Future updates may be provided as they become available.
