Champaign Police Investigating Two Overnight Shootings

On August 22, 2020, at approximately 10:05 p.m., Champaign Police responded to the 900/1000 block of Bloomington Road for the report of shots heard and a subject who had been struck by a vehicle. Upon arrival, officers discovered a 29-year-old male in the roadway with two gunshot wounds that are not believed to be life-threatening. The victim was transported to a local hospital.

The preliminary investigation indicates a group of individuals were gathered outside of a local business. An unknown assailant then exited a vehicle, fired multiple times, and shot the victim. The victim collapsed in the roadway and was subsequently run over by the fleeing suspect vehicle, resulting in additional injuries to his left leg.

On August 23, 2020, at approximately 4:18 a.m., Champaign Police responded to the 100 block of Kenwood Road for the report of a shooting. Upon arrival, officers discovered evidence of shots fired and began securing the scene. Shortly after, police learned four gunshot victims arrived at local hospitals by personal transport. Two 30-year-old males and a 37-year-old male arrived with non-life-threatening gunshot wounds. A fourth victim, a 25-year-old male, suffered a life-threatening gunshot wound to his chest and his prognosis is currently unknown.

The preliminary investigation indicates the victims were shot while at a party outside in the apartment complex common area. At some point during the gathering, an altercation ensued that led to gunfire.

Champaign Police are processing information and evidence and are actively working to identify the circumstances leading up to both incidents. It is not known if these incidents are related or not at this time. The investigations are ongoing, and no arrests have currently been made. Future updates may be provided as they become available.

Any person or business with exterior video surveillance systems in the area of either incident is encouraged to contact the police department.  It is believed video footage could be of investigative assistance.
