As Fire Prevention Week 2019 Approaches, Remember: “Not Every Hero Wears a Cape. Plan and Practice Your Escape!”

In a typical home, you can have as little as one to two minutes to escape safely after the smoke alarm sounds.  Knowing how to use that time wisely takes planning and practice.

The National Fire Protection Association’s 2019 Fire Prevention Week Campaign, “Not Every Hero Wears a Cape. Plan and Practice Your Escape!” works to educate the public about basic but essential ways to quickly and safely escape a home fire.

  • Make a home escape plan.  Draw a map of your home showing all the doors and windows.
  • Know at least two ways out of every room, if possible.
  • Have an outside meeting place a safe distance from the home.
  • Practice your home fire drill at night and during the day.

Remember, when the smoke alarm sounds, get out and stay out.  If you must escape through smoke, stay low to the ground.  Try to close doors behind you as you leave, to help slow the spread of smoke and fire, and help others exit.

Join the Champaign Fire Department at Market Place Mall near the Food Court on October 14th, 2019, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.  There will be educational opportunities inside the Mall, and a “Touch-A-Truck” outside the Food Court.
