Apartment Fire – 56 East Healey Street

The Champaign and Urbana Fire Departments responded to a working fire at 56 East Healey Street, Monday, June 12, 2017, at 9:43 p.m. Upon arrival on the scene, fire crews reported fire coming from a third-floor balcony of a three-story apartment building.  Suppression efforts began immediately.

Firefighters made an initial attack from the ground and transitioned to within the apartment by advancing a hose line to the 3rd floor.  Firefighters had the fire extinguished by 10:18 p.m.

The fire was contained to one apartment.  The resident of this apartment was displaced because of the fire.  There were no firefighter or civilian injuries reported.

The total damage estimate is $15,000 to the structure and contents.  The cause of the fire is undetermined at this time.  Investigators remain on scene interviewing the occupants and performing a scene examination.

The Champaign Fire Department reminds all citizens to maintain a working smoke alarm in their place of residence and to have and practice a home escape plan.  Smoke alarms can provide early notification when seconds count.
