Working Garage Fire, 810 William Street

The Champaign Fire Department responded to a working garage fire at 810 William Street, Saturday, November 14, 2015, at 12:20 a.m. Upon arrival on the scene, fire crews reported heavy fire visible from the detached two-car garage. Fire suppression began immediately.

Nine pieces of Fire/Rescue/EMS equipment and approximately 26 emergency response personnel responded to the call. Captain Roger Cruse was the commanding officer of this incident. The fire was brought under control The garage sustained heavy damage from the fire. The origin and cause of the fire was determined to be at the rear of the structure and was accidental.

The Champaign Fire Department reminds all citizens to never leave your grill unattended. Grills should be placed well away from the home, deck, and out from under eaves and overhanging branches. In one out of every six (16%) home structure fires in which grills were involved in ignition, something that could catch fire was too close to the grill.
