Champaign Police Join Statewide Traffic Safety Effort Ahead of Labor Day

Law Enforcement to focus on impaired and unsafe driving ahead of holiday travel

The Champaign Police Department is partnering with the Illinois Department of Transportation, the Illinois State Police, and more than 200 local law enforcement agencies to promote visible enforcement efforts ahead of the Labor Day holiday. From August 15 to September 2, motorists can expect increased patrols focused on impaired driving, as well as other traffic violations.

“Champaign Police work proactively to ensure the safety of every driver, cyclist, and pedestrian in or near our community’s roadways,” said Police Chief Timothy T. Tyler. “Drivers are reminded that it is never acceptable to drive impaired, and we must all do our part to ensure everyone gets home safely.”

In addition to monitoring for impaired drivers, Champaign Police will also be seeking signs of distraction, seatbelt concerns, and other violations of the rules of the road. When making plans involving the use of alcohol or marijuana, drivers are encouraged to plan for a designated driver, utilize a rideshare, or make other arrangements for a safe, sober ride home.

During the enforcement campaign, officers will promote visible enforcement of Illinois law to encourage safe behavior by drivers. Those found to be impaired, distracted behind the wheel, or in violation of other rules of the road will be issued citations and written warnings, when appropriate. Efforts to address distracted driving in Champaign will focus on arterial routes, especially in areas where they impact neighborhoods.

The Illinois distracted driving campaign is funded with federal traffic safety funds administered by IDOT.
