Homicide Investigation – 2400 Block of W. Springfield Avenue

Champaign police were dispatched at 7:50 p.m. on December 9, 2024, to the 2400 block of W. Springfield Avenue for a report of a shooting with injuries. On-scene, officers located a 21-year-old female with multiple life-threatening gunshot wounds. Officers immediately rendered medical aid with assistance from the Champaign Fire Department until the victim could be transported to an area hospital. She succumbed to her injuries at the hospital a short time later.

The initial investigation indicates that a man and woman entered a business when an unknown subject opened fire. The woman was struck multiple times. The man was not struck. The subject then fled the area on foot. At this time, the reason for the gunfire remains unknown.

Officers continue to canvass the surrounding area for witnesses and video footage that may be of investigative assistance. Any resident or business in the nearby area with exterior surveillance camera systems is encouraged to notify the police department. No arrests have been made at this time and the investigation is ongoing. Future updates may be provided as they become available.
