The City of Champaign is now accepting applications from residents interested in filling an opening in the District 3 Council Member office. Applications are available on the City’s website and from the City Clerk. Completed applications must be submitted to the City Clerk by 12:00 p.m. on June 3, 2024, via email at [email protected] or in person at the City Clerk’s Office located at the City Building, 102 N. Neil St., Champaign.
Per State statutes, to be eligible to fill the vacancy, qualified applicants must:
- Be an actual resident in Council District 3;
- Be a registered voter in the City of Champaign;
- Be current in payments of taxes/debts owed to the City of Champaign; and
- Not have been convicted of a felony, bribery, perjury or other infamous crime.
In January 2024, the City Council adopted a new district map and revised the City Council district boundaries. Potential applicants are advised to visit the City’s interactive Council District map, which is found on the City’s website and enter their address to confirm they reside in Council District 3.
The Champaign City Council will review the applications and interview qualified applicants during a Study Session meeting on June 11, 2024. It is anticipated the City Council could vote to fill the vacancy during their regular meeting on June 18, 2024. The appointed individual will serve through the remaining balance of the unexpired Council term, which is May 6, 2025.
Former Council Member Daniel Iniguez resigned from his District 3 City Council seat on May 14, 2024. State statute requires the City Council to fill the vacancy within 60 days of occurrence, which is July 13, 2024.
