The Champaign Fire Department responded to a fire in a single-family home in the 1300 block of north Walnut St., Saturday, March 2, at 6:28 a.m. Fire crews were able to quickly get the fire under control.
Firefighters responded to a report from an occupant of a fire in this single-story home. Once on the scene, fire crews reported heavy smoke and fire coming from the front of the residence and that all occupants were outside. Firefighters deployed multiple hose lines and worked to extinguish the fire.
The cause of this fire has not been determined as investigators remain on the scene conducting their investigation. There were no firefighter injuries reported. One occupant was evaluated on scene and transported to a local hospital. One dog perished in the fire. The occupants will be displaced because of the fire.
The Champaign Fire Department reminds everyone to maintain a working smoke alarm in their place of residence and to have and practice a home escape plan. Smoke alarms can provide early notification when seconds count.
