April 4, 2023, Community Relations Manager, Janel Gomez, attended a workshop on fair housing presented by Housing Action Illinois and the Hope Fair Housing Center. The purpose of the workshop was to inform social service providers about the new Illinois state level law. This law, which became effective on Jan 1, 2023, lists source of income as a protected class. It directs that people cannot be treated unfairly by landlords and/or mortgage lenders because of their subsidy or non-wage legal sources of income. Persons who feel discriminated against can file a complaint with the City’s Equity and Engagement Department, Hope Fair Housing Center, or the Illinois Department of Human Rights.
