The Champaign Fire Department responded to a fire in a large commercial building at 301 Mercury Dr., Friday, March 31, at 5:54 a.m. Fire crews continue to overhaul and extinguish remaining hot spots.
Firefighters responded to a report from a passerby of a fire in this large commercial building. While still en route to the scene, responders were able to see heavy fire on the roof and called for a second alarm. Once it was confirmed that any occupants were out of the building, firefighters fought the fire defensively using ladder trucks. After the roof fire was largely extinguished and it was deemed safe to enter the building, crews entered and began using multiple hand lines to extinguish the fire that had extended inside.
The cause of this fire has not been determined as investigators remain on the scene conducting their investigation. There were no firefighter or occupant injuries reported.
