Champaign Police Investigating Overnight Shooting Incidents

Champaign Police are seeking community assistance in the investigation of multiple overnight shooting incidents, including two shooting incidents that injured three victims. Additionally, details on a third investigation will be issued via media release later today. Each shooting appears to be an isolated incident, and there is believed to be no relation between them.

On August 26, 2022, at approximately 11:06 p.m., Champaign Police were dispatched to reports of a shooting with injuries in the 2000 Block of Cynthia Drive. As they arrived on-scene, officers found a 23-year-old Champaign man with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to the arm. Officers rendered immediate medical aid until the victim could be transported to a local hospital. There, he was treated and is presently listed in stable condition. The initial investigation indicates that there was a large fight in the area when the shooting occurred. In addition to the victim, one vehicle was struck by gunfire. No arrests have been made at this time and the investigation is ongoing.

On August 27, 2022, at approximately 1:28 a.m., Champaign Police were dispatched to the scene of a shooting with injuries near the 700 Block of S. Third Street, near the intersection of Third and Green. Upon arrival, Champaign Police located two victims in the area and immediately rendered medical aid. The first victim, a 24-year-old male from Danville, was found to have a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to the lower extremity. The second victim, a 24-year-old male from Danville, was found to have a gunshot wound to the foot. Both victims were transported to a local hospital, where they are in stable condition. The initial investigation indicates that an altercation took place between multiple individuals in the area, leading to shots being fired. No arrests have been made at this time and the investigation is ongoing.

In each case, officers completed a canvass of the surrounding area, but residents and businesses nearby with exterior surveillance camera systems are encouraged to notify the police department. It is believed video footage may be of investigative assistance. Future updates may be provided as they become available. The Champaign Police would like to thank our law enforcement partners – including the University of Illinois Police Department, Urbana Police Department, and the Champaign County Sheriff’s Office – for their assistance in investigating these incidents.

Citizens are reminded that information submitted to Crime Stoppers is completely anonymous. Calls are routed to a third-party national call center that receives your information, completes a tips information form, and then passes the information to the appropriate law enforcement agency. Caller ID tracking is not utilized by Crime Stoppers and conversations are not recorded. Crime Stoppers will pay cash rewards of $5,000 for tips that lead to an arrest in any homicide case, $2,500 for tips leading to an arrest in a felony crime involving a firearm, and up to $1,000 for tips leading to the arrest of the person(s) responsible for any other crime.
