City Sells Vacant Lots to Habitat for Humanity

On January 19, 2022, the City published requests for bids for the sale of six City owned properties that no longer serve a purpose for the City. These properties were obtained by the City through Code Compliance activities. The requests for bids were advertised in the News Gazette, CGTV and the City’s social media accounts. In addition, signs were posted on the properties and letters were sent to adjacent property owners and other interested parties notifying them of the requests for bids, how to access the bid documents and the date and time the bids were due.

On February 16, 2022, the City held the bid opening. A total of four bids were received from two interested parties for three of the properties. As the highest bidder with a complete bid packet, Habitat for Humanity will purchase the three properties. The following properties will be transferred in the coming weeks.

• 506 Ash St.
• 1002 W. Beardsley Ave.
• 1010 Maple St.

By purchasing the properties from the City of Champaign, Habitat for Humanity has increased their inventory of available building sites for families in Champaign from one to four. The purchase of these lots increases the opportunity for affordable housing in the City of Champaign.

In Summer 2022, staff will publish the second semi-annual request for bids for the purchase of the three remaining and any newly identified properties.
