On Dec. 17, 2021, at approximately 9:18 p.m., Champaign Police responded to the 1700 block of West Springfield Avenue for reports of shots fired. Upon arrival, officers located a 16-year-old female with a gunshot wound to her right thigh and a second to her left foot. Officers immediately provided medical aid on scene. The victim was transported to a local hospital and is currently in stable condition.
The preliminary investigation indicates the victim was walking in the parking lot of a strip mall when she was shot. Witnesses reported seeing two males fleeing the scene on foot after the shots were fired. Champaign Police have recovered 10 shell casings from the scene.
Any resident or business in the nearby area with exterior surveillance camera systems is encouraged to notify the police department. It is believed video footage may be of investigative assistance. No arrests have been made at this time and the investigation is ongoing. Future updates may be provided as they become available.
