Shooting Investigation – 600 Block of East University Avenue

On August 21, 2021, at approximately 2:42 a.m., Champaign Police responded to the 600 block of East University Avenue for the report of a shooting. Upon arrival, officers located a 23-year-old male suffering from two non-life-threatening gunshot wounds. The victim was transported to a local hospital and taken into surgery.

The preliminary investigation indicates the victim was driving a vehicle with another passenger when a person stepped into the roadway and was subsequently hit by the car. As the vehicle stopped, an unknown subject approached the driver’s side of the vehicle and fired multiple rounds into the car, striking the victim twice. The person struck by the vehicle was not significantly injured. Police recovered nine shell casings from the scene.

Any resident or business in the nearby area with exterior surveillance camera systems is encouraged to notify the police department. It is believed video footage may be of investigative assistance. No arrests have been made at this time and the investigation is ongoing. Future updates may be provided as they become available.
