The Champaign Fire Department responded to a partial building collapse at a vacant commercial structure at 63 Chester St., Saturday, June 26th, at 5:47 p.m. Fire crews have determined the building is vacant and closed nearby streets.
Firefighters responded to a report of a partial building collapse at this commercial structure, called in by a passerby. Once on the scene, fire crews reported that a portion of the rear of the building had collapsed. Firefighters quickly determined the building was vacant by deploying the Department’s drone and closed nearby Chester and Water Streets and adjacent sidewalks in the event more of the building collapses.
There were no firefighter injuries reported. The cause of this collapse is currently not known. The City of Champaign Public Works Department is deploying barricades to Chester and Water Streets to reroute traffic.
