On May 11, 2021, at approximately 6:47 p.m., Champaign Police responded to the 2100 block of West Springfield Avenue for multiple reports of gunfire. Upon arrival, police located a large crime scene and were soon informed a 19-year-old male arrived at a local hospital by personal transport with a serious gunshot wound to his leg. The victim’s status is currently unknown.
The preliminary investigation indicates several sports cars met up in the parking lot of a private business when the suspect(s) approached on foot and began firing. Fifty-four (54) spent shell casings have been recovered at the scene, and police have identified three vehicles and one business that were damaged by gunfire. No additional injuries have been reported to police.
Any resident or business in the nearby area with exterior surveillance camera systems is encouraged to notify the police department. It is believed video footage may be of investigative assistance.
No arrests have been made at this time and the investigation is ongoing. Future updates may be provided as they become available.
