Shooting Investigation – 1400 block of South Mattis Avenue

On April 19, 2021, at approximately 12:17 a.m., Champaign Police responded to the 1400 block of South Mattis Avenue for the report of shots fired. On scene, officers located a residence that was struck 14 times by gunfire and quickly learned a 14-year-old female who was inside was suffering from a serious but non-life-threatening gunshot wound to her lower back. She was transferred to a local hospital where she was taken into surgery and is currently recovering.

The preliminary investigation indicates the house was fired upon from outside the residence. A total of four occupants were inside the residence, including the victim, when the event occurred.

Any resident or business in the nearby area with exterior surveillance camera systems is encouraged to contact the police department. It is believed video footage may be of investigative assistance. The investigation is ongoing, and no arrests have been made at this time. Future updates may be provided as they become available.
