Award Recipients Announced for the 2021 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Countywide Celebration

The MLK Countywide Committee and the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Advocacy for Justice Committee are pleased to announce the names of those being honored at the 20th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Countywide Celebration being held on January 17, 2021.

Three community members will be honored with a prestigious award in recognition of their work to uphold the principles and ideals of Dr. King, including:
• Karen Simms– Recipient of the Doris Hoskins Prestigious Community Service Award
• Ricardo Diaz– Recipient of the James R. Burgess, Jr. – Susan Freiburg Humanitarian Award
• Rev. Willie Comer– Recipient of the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Outstanding Achievement Award

In addition, the MLK Countywide Committee will award Jennifer Roscoe (WCIA-TV) an Honorary MLK Countywide Committee Member Award, in recognition of her years of service as the mistress of ceremonies for this prestigious, annual event.

All award recipients will be honored during the event on January 17, 2021. Due to the ongoing pandemic, this year’s ceremony will be held virtually via Zoom. This event is free and open to the public and everyone is encouraged to participate. The Zoom link will be promoted on the event webpage (mlkcelebration.org) and social media prior to the ceremony.

The MLK Countywide Committee and the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Advocacy for Justice Committee looks forward to continuing to recognize the achievements of area youth and the commitment of community members, while also honoring the significant contributions to civil and human rights practiced by Dr. King. The MLK Countywide Committee is comprised of the City of Champaign, City of Urbana, Parkland College, University of Illinois, Champaign County, and the Village of Rantoul.
