Deputy City Manager Joan Walls Receives ICMA Credentialed Manager Designation

Joan WallsJoan Walls, Deputy City Manager for the City of Champaign, recently received the Credentialed Manager designation from the International City/County Management Association (ICMA). Ms. Walls is one of approximately 1,300 local government management professionals currently credentialed through the ICMA Voluntary Credentialing Program.

To receive the prestigious Credentialed Manager designation from ICMA, an individual must have significant experience as a senior management executive in local government, hold a degree in public administration or a related field, and demonstrate a commitment to the high standards of integrity and to lifelong learning and professional development.

“Joan is a well-respected leader in the city management profession,” said City Manager Dorothy Ann David. “The City of Champaign is lucky to have a professional of Joan’s caliber as part of our leadership team. Her achievement of ICMA Credentialed Manager status is a national recognition of her management expertise, contributions to professional local government and commitment to community service throughout her career.”

Ms. Walls has served the City of Champaign since 2000; the last 6 years as Deputy City Manager. Prior to this appointment, she served as the Deputy City Manager for Community Relations, and prior to that as Assistant to the Chief of Police for Community Services/Public Information Officer.

Ms. Walls is a member of ICMA, Illinois City/County Management Association (ILCMA), and the Big 10 Cities Network. She has a Master of Science in Educational Psychology from Eastern Illinois University and a Bachelor of Science in Administration of Justice from Southern Illinois University.

Its mission is to advance professional local government through leadership, management, innovation, and ethics and to increase the proficiency of appointed chief administrative officers, assistant administrators, and other employees who serve in local government.
