The Champaign Fire Department responded to the initial dispatch of a working fire at 1700 W. Washington St., Friday, June 14, 2019, at 1:19 p.m. Fire crews quickly extinguished a small fire near an industrial furnace.
Firefighters responded to a report of an industrial furnace on fire. Once on scene, crews found a small fire contained near an industrial furnace. Firefighters extended a single hose line and quickly extinguished the fire.
The cause of this fire is accidental. Molten steel came in contact with normal combustibles such as wood and plastic that were near the industrial furnace. There were no firefighter or civilian injuries reported.
The Champaign Fire Department reminds all citizens that smoke alarms can provide early notification when seconds count. When a smoke alarm sounds, get out and stay out.
