Spring Residential Electronic Collection Event a Success

The spring Residential Electronics Collection Event was held May 18, 2019, at Parkland College.  The bi-annual event is co-sponsored by the City of Champaign, City of Urbana, Village of Savoy, and Champaign County.  Out of the 2,115 that pre-registered via the online registration system, approximately 1,700 registrants participated.  Multifamily property owners (MFPO) were also invited to participate.  Approximately ten MFPO showed up to drop off unwanted electronics at a prearranged date.

Registrants could bring a total of seven electronic items, with a four TV limit.  A total of 208,074 pounds (104 tons) of unwanted electronic items were collected at this event, which is a record high for a one-day collection event in Champaign County.  TVs collected represented 70 percent of the total electronics collected.

These collection events are a no-cost opportunity for residents to get rid of unwanted TVs of all shapes and sizes.  There are local year-round recycling options for most other electronics and certain types/sizes of TVs.  Visit the City’s recycling webpage for more information: champaignil.gov/recycling.

The fall collection event will be held on Saturday, October 12, 2019, and residents can start registering for that event on September 9, 2019.  The online registration website is ecycle.simplybook.me.  Full event details can be found on the registration website.  Contact Nichole Millage, Environmental Sustainability Specialist, at 217-403-4780 or email [email protected] with any questions.
