Champaign Police Invite Community Members for Coffee and Conversation

In celebration of the third annual national Coffee with a Cop Day, the Champaign Police Department will host Coffee with a Cop on Wednesday, Oct. 3, from 7-9 a.m. at Biggby Coffee, located at 401 S. Mattis Ave. Coffee with a Cop is a unique opportunity for residents to meet with police officers to ask questions, voice concerns and to get to know one another better through casual conversation. The coffee is complimentary for those participating.

Most of the contact officers have with the public tends to occur during emergency or high-stress situations that may not be the most encouraging for relationship building. Community members may also be hesitant to approach officers while they’re on duty. Coffee with a Cop helps to break down the barriers and allows dedicated time for one-on-one interaction in a relaxed setting to help bring our community closer.

“This is a fun community initiative that fosters simple and open discussion between our officers and residents, and we encourage all who can to come join us for a relaxing morning of conversation,” said Champaign Chief of Police Anthony Cobb. “Whether you want to offer a suggestion, discuss an important issue or to chat about sports, we’d love to hear what you have to say. I’d also like to thank Biggby Coffee for hosting us.”

The Oct. 3 date marks the third annual national Coffee with a Cop Day. Coffee with a Cop is a nationally recognized initiative supported by The United States Department of Justice, Office of Community Oriented Policing Services. Events are held across the country, with the goal of advancing the practice of community policing. For more information, visit www.coffeewithacop.com.
