Natural Gas Leak – Intersection of John and Locust Streets

The Champaign Fire Department responded to the initial report of a four-inch natural gas line that had been struck in the intersection of John and Locust Streets by construction going on in the area.

Crews quickly closed both John and Locust Streets in the immediate area of the leak and began monitoring for gas in the area.  While fire crews were unable to detect significant amounts of gas, one apartment building was temporarily evacuated as a precaution while the leak was brought under control by Ameren.

All streets closed because of the leak are now open.  Ameren will remain on the scene completing necessary repairs to the gas line.
