The Champaign and Urbana Fire Departments responded to a two-alarm fire at 102 N State Street, Emmanuel Memorial Episcopal Church on Tuesday, January 23, 2018, at 4:49 p.m. Upon arrival on the scene, fire crews found heavy smoke and fire coming from the attic of the church rectory. Suppression efforts began immediately.
A passerby noticed smoke coming from the church rectory and called 911. Once on scene, firefighters deployed hose lines into the rectory. Firefighters found the fire in the attic and quickly extinguished it. By 5:30 p.m., firefighters had contained the fire to the attic above the rectory. There were no firefighter or civilian injuries reported.
The cause of the fire is currently undetermined as investigators remain on scene performing their scene examination.
