The Champaign Fire Department responded to a working fire at 2 Hanover Court Unit A, Friday, December 8, 2017, at 7:17 p.m. Upon arrival on the scene, fire crews found heavy smoke and fire coming from the front of a single-story duplex. Suppression efforts began immediately.
Firefighters deployed hose lines inside the duplex and quickly extinguished the fire that was found originating from the kitchen. No injuries were reported to occupants or firefighters. The Emergency Services Support Team was called to aid the displaced occupants of the duplex. Champaign-Urbana Mass Transit was on scene as a warming station for the occupants and firefighters.
Investigators have determined the fire was accidental. The fire originated in the kitchen and was cooking related. Smoke detectors in the residence notified occupants of the fire. The Champaign Fire Department reminds all citizens to maintain a working smoke alarm in their place of residence. Smoke alarms can provide early notification when seconds count.
