Police Investigate Weapon Discharge Following CPD Officer Response to Assault and Robbery

This morning, at approximately 5:41 AM, Champaign Police Officers responded to the 1300 Block of Hanover Drive for a reported robbery. According to the victim, she and a group of acquaintances were hanging out together when the acquaintances physically assaulted and robbed her of an undetermined amount of currency.

Upon arrival, police interviewed the victim, who identified the residence where the suspects were believed to be located. The investigating officer approached the home where the subjects fled, and knocked on the door in an attempt to contact a resident. After knocking on the door, the door opened and the officer was met by a 23-year-old male subject from Danville. The male suspect appeared at the door in possession of a handgun that was visibly located in the front waistband of his pants. The suspect was gripping the firearm with one hand at the time the officer made contact.  The responding officer demanded the subject raise his hands, and discharged his duty weapon after the subject failed to comply. The subject immediately slammed the door shut and police quickly established a perimeter around the home.

Once the perimeter was secured, all occupants of the residence were ordered to exit the home. The 23-year-old male and several other individuals exited the home and were detained pending additional investigation.  No injuries were inflicted to any subjects or officers, however due to an existing medical condition the suspect was transported to the hospital for medical evaluation.

Champaign Police are investigating this incident, to include processing evidence, and interviewing potential suspects and witnesses.  At this time, no arrests have been made. This incident was captured on the officer’s body worn camera and will be shared as the investigation allows.  Per Department policy, the involved officer will be temporarily placed on Administrative Leave pending preliminary results of the criminal and administrative investigations. Champaign Police will issue additional updates as the investigation progresses and information can be made available to the public.
