Commercial Fire – 63 East Chester Street

The Champaign Fire Department responded to a working fire at 63 East Chester Street, Sunday, October 1, 2017, at 7:47 a.m.  Upon arrival on the scene, fire crews found smoke coming from the roof of a commercial structure currently under renovation.  Suppression efforts began immediately.     

A passerby noticed a smoke odor in the neighborhood and called 911.  Fire crews arrived on scene and declared a working fire at this address.  Crews went into the building with hose lines, and quickly located the fire on the second floor.  There was no one in the building at the time of the fire.  There were no firefighter or civilian injuries reported.       

The cause of the fire is undetermined at this time.  Investigators remain on scene performing a scene examination.       

The Champaign Fire Department reminds all citizens to maintain a working smoke alarm in their place of residence and to have and practice a home escape plan.  Smoke alarms can provide early notification when seconds count.
