The Champaign Fire Department responded to a working fire at 13 Sandalwood Drive, Tuesday, September 12, 2017, at 11:57 a.m. Upon arrival on the scene, fire crews found a heavily involved fire in a mobile home. Suppression efforts began immediately.
Champaign Police Department Detectives on north Market Street noticed smoke in the area, investigated, and discovered smoke coming from a mobile home in Shadow Wood. Once on scene, firefighters deployed hose lines both inside and outside the home and quickly extinguished the fire. Nearby homes were evacuated as winds varied during the fire. Three adult occupants were not home at the time of the fire and have been displaced. There were no firefighter or civilian injuries reported.
The fire began in the kitchen of the home but investigators have been unable to determine the cause.
The Champaign Fire Department reminds all citizens to maintain a working smoke alarm in their place of residence and to have and practice a home escape plan. Smoke alarms can provide early notification when seconds count.
