The Champaign Fire Department responded to a working fire at 403 Grove Street, Saturday, February 18, 2017, at 9:34 a.m. Upon arrival on the scene, fire crews reported smoke and fire coming from the detached garages at both 403 and 405 Grove Street, and the house at 403 Grove Street. Suppression efforts began immediately.
Twelve pieces of Fire/Rescue/EMS equipment and approximately 27 emergency response personnel responded from Champaign Fire and Pro Ambulance Service. The occupants of both homes were outside when the fire department arrived. Fire crews had the fire out by 10:15 a.m. There were no firefighter or civilian injuries reported. The total damage estimate is $45,000 to the house and garage at 403 Grove Street and $30,000 to the house and garage at 405 Grove Street. Investigators continue to work at the scene to determine the cause.
The Champaign Fire Department reminds all citizens to maintain a working smoke alarm in their place of residence and to have and practice a home escape plan. Smoke alarms can provide early notification when seconds count.
