Firefighters, staff from the Champaign Fire and Neighborhood Services Departments, and employees of WCIA/WCIX Television and Home Depot were out Friday, June 17, installing smoke alarms in northwest Champaign.
Thirteen volunteers from WCIA/WCIX Television came out on their Founder’s Day to be part of the effort. Six volunteers from Home Depot also took part in the event. Volunteers were invited into 45 homes to test smoke alarms and make installations as needed. The three-person crews installed 130 smoke alarms and 50 combination carbon monoxide/smoke alarms.
Following the campaign, City employees had the opportunity to join the volunteers from WCIA/WCIX Television and Home Depot for a cookout.
