The Champaign Fire Department responded to a working fire at 1700 W. Washington Street, Friday, May 20, 2016, at 8:48 p.m. Upon arrival on the scene, fire crews reported moderate smoke coming from this commercial structure. Suppression efforts began immediately.
Fire crews responded to this third-alarm fire from Champaign, Urbana, and Savoy. Crews battled this fire into the early morning, striking the fire at approximately 2:16 a.m. Neighbors were able to remain in their homes but were forced to find alternative routes as Mattis Avenue was closed for a portion of the evening. Fire crews will remain on scene for a portion of the day Saturday, to put out any remaining spot fires.
There were no firefighter or civilian injuries reported. A total damage estimate is currently unavailable. The origin and cause is currently undetermined as the fire investigation continues.
The Champaign Fire Department reminds all citizens to maintain a working smoke alarm in their place of residence and to have and practice a home escape plan.
