The City of Champaign is announcing the temporary closure of several streets to accommodate a community rally and march through downtown Champaign this evening (December 15, 2015).
The following actions are being taken to ensure the safety of pedestrians and motorists:
- 5:00 – 6:30 p.m.: North First Street will be closed between Park Street and University Avenue.
- 6:15 – 6:45 p.m.: Neil Street will be closed between Main Street and University Avenue.
- 6:15 p.m. – end of City Council Meeting: Chester Street will be closed between Walnut Street and Neil Street.
- Police will be positioned at the following downtown intersections to direct traffic and ensure pedestrian safety: Neil Street and Main Street, Walnut Street and Main Street, Chestnut Street and Main Street.At approximately 6:15 p.m., rally participants will march from the Champaign Police Department (82 E University Avenue) to the Champaign City Building (102 N Neil Street). Rally participants will leave the Police Department and march west though the Main Street viaduct, west on Main Street to Neil Street, then south on Neil Street to the Champaign City Building.
Area businesses and motorists driving through downtown should be mindful of increased pedestrian traffic and these temporary road closures. Streets will reopen as scheduled, or when pedestrian traffic safety allows.
