City of Champaign to Hold Liquor License Lottery

The City of Champaign will hold a lottery drawing for those individuals interested in obtaining one of two available Class “A” Liquor Licenses. An “A” Liquor License permits the licensee to sell any alcoholic liquor by the drink (i.e. bar or tavern). The lottery will be held on September 8, 2015, at 4:30 p.m. in the Champaign City Council Chambers.

Those interested in participating in the lottery drawing must submit a completed registration form for a specific person and premise, along with a non-refundable $100 application fee, to the Office of the Local Liquor Commissioner (Mayor’s Office, 102 N Neil Street, Champaign). Completed registration forms are due by 12:00 p.m. on September 8, 2015. Only one application per person and per location will be allowed. More detailed applicant information is included on the registration form.

Registration forms are available for download at ci.champaign.il.us/LiquorLicense or can be picked up at the Mayor’s Office. Those with questions about the lottery should call the Mayor’s Office at 217-403-8720.

The City of Champaign permits a maximum of 60 Class “A” Liquor Licenses to be available at any one time. Two “A” licenses recently became available when two local businesses closed. A number of individuals have expressed an interest in obtaining a Class “A” Liquor License, so a lottery drawing will be used to fairly distribute the two licenses now available.
