Champaign Fire Department responded to 1903 Karen Ct. on February 22, 2015 at 12:42 a.m. for a report of a working fire. Upon arrival, fire crews found heavy smoke and flames emitting from the east unit of the structure. While performing search operations, fire crews found a resident asleep in apartment unit three (3). Lieutenant Roger Cruse, Engineer J.P Childers and Firefighter Matt Quinlan from Engine 154, made entry into the structure and found the resident in a bedroom. The resident was removed from the structure but did not require medical treatment. Fire crews advanced multiple hand lines throughout the structure. One firefighter received minor injuries at the scene. One civilian was injured and transported to Carle Foundation Hospital. A total of seven occupants have been displaced. Champaign Police Department assisted with traffic control. Emergency Services Support Team and the American Red Cross responded to assist displaced residents. The Champaign Fire Department encourages all residents to have working smoke detectors.
