Neighborhood Coordinator John Ruffin facilitated an introductory meeting between representatives from the Daily Bread and existing North First Street Businesses. Also in attendance representing the City were Neighborhood Programs Manager Kerri Spear, Planning and Economic Development Director Bruce Knight, Champaign Police Sgt. Tom Foster, and Councilmember Will Kyles. The issues of concern outlined by Will Jones from North First Street are as follows; loitering, behavior issues, vandalism, and lines for guest. Council Member Will Kyles added parking to the list of concerns and requested that NSD and Planning conduct 1:1 meetings with each of the businesses to engage them. Bruce Knight requested that we explore how to create a faux restaurant that blended into existing business fabric of the corridor and maximize the use of the existing courtyard to create a welcoming environment. Daily Bread representatives committed to reviewing the list of concerns and developing a response to each that will be shared at a follow-up meeting in January. Additionally, they expressed a willingness to cooperate with the businesses to ensure their relocation to the corridor is done in a way that is transparent and does not negatively impact the existing businesses. Our goal is to develop a voluntary working agreement that will provide a framework to support those stated goals.
